As the beerific Brewmistress has recently pointed out, all true beer nuts are huge fans of the India Pale Ale. Bitter, fruity, malty, I love them in all shapes and sizes so it would come as no surprise that I am keen to make one of my own as a staple in my brewing arsenal.
I have been playing with a mini-batch all grain Black Rye IPA which has been improving with each batch, but I felt that I needed to brew an easier IPA (at least 20 liters) for more regular consumption. The only real way for me to achieve this with my limited tools is to do an extract. After some research and random recipe combining, I decided on some ingredients and did the deed.
WarBrew American IPA (extract brew)
Grains (Mash time: 60min at 68°C | Mashed with 4.5ltr | Sparged with 5ltr)
- Pale Malt - 1.5kg
- Carafa T1 - 50g
- Cara Dark - 20g
- DME - 2kg (not included in mash, but added to boil)
- Citra - 29g @ 70min
- Citra - 15g @ 10min
- Simcoe - 15g @ 10min
- Citra - 44g @ flame-out
- Simcoe - 44g @ flame-out
- Safale US-05 Ale (pitched at 26°C after topping up fermenter to roughly the 22 liter mark)
Until then, feel free to use this recipe, adapt it and give me some feedback!
